Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a silent disease. In general, patients will not notice any symptoms until fracture occurs. Sufferers will become kyphotic and shorten. With an increase in age, over 50% elderly suffered from osteoporosis. Everyday, there is around 10 elderly admitted due to fracture femur. It is estimated that fracture due to osteoporosis will highly increase in future 20 years.

Risk factor for osteoporosis

  • Age 50 or above
  • Female
  • Frequent give birth
  • Manopause before age 40
  • Thin
  • Insufficient weight bearing exercise
  • Smoking and drinking
  • Drinking too much tea or coffee
  • Eating too salty food
  • Insufficient calcium and vitamin in the diet
  • On long term steroid
  • Having a family history of osteoporosis
