Based on the diagnostic criteria for age-related sarcopenia developed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP), Sarcopenia is clinically defined as:
(1) Gait speed
(2) Handgrip strength
(3) Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM)
- Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (Men: <7.0kg/m2, Women: <5.4kg/m2)
Assessment tools for sarcopenia:
Sarcopenia should be diagnosed in three criteria:
(1) Muscle mass
- Computed Tomography scan (CT scan).
- Magnetic Resonance Imagery (MRI).
- Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA).
- Bioimpedance analysis (BIA).
(2) Muscle strength
(3) Physical performance
- Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB).
- Gait speed.
- Grip strength.
- Thigh muscle thickness ratio.
